When people in Sri Lanka hear the name Andare, many instantly picture a court jester, a man in colourful attire making witty remarks and entertaining the king. This image, however, is incomplete, and in many ways, a product of how British colonial narratives simplified and misrepresented him. The truth is, Andare was far more than “just a joker.” He was a master of wit, a keen observer of human nature, and someone who used satire to shed light on the realities of life. Through clever humour, he spoke truths that might otherwise have been ignored, delivering valuable messages hidden in laughter.
Our Andare Card Game is an invitation for children and families to rediscover this beloved Sri Lankan figure, not as a clown, but as an inspiring character to look up to. It’s a celebration of his sharp mind, joyful spirit, and the way he faced life’s challenges with both intelligence and humour.
What the Andare Card Game Is (and why little ones love it)

Adventures of Andare is a joyful, movement-and-story card game designed especially for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 2–5). Children help Andare (and the clever Little Princess) travel from the Start card to the King’s Castle, meeting tiny adventures along the way. Every turn is simple: roll the dice, move to the nearest Map Card that matches the colour, draw a matching Action Card, and complete a playful activity to move ahead. First to the Castle wins, cue big cheers and bigger smiles.
What makes the experience work so well for very young kids is the clear, colour-coded play:
- Red cards – Move & play (Motor Skills): hop, stomp, balance, crawl, safe, giggly activities that build coordination.
- Green cards – Think & notice (Cognitive Skills): count coconuts, spot colours, match, compare, and make little choices.
- Purple cards – Be kind (Values): say “Ayubowan,” share pretend snacks, tidy up, comfort a friend, gentle habits rooted in Sri Lankan culture.
The rules are truly toddler-friendly: set up the path from Start to Castle, put the Andare token at Start (add the Little Princess token for two-player fun), sort the Action Cards into Red, Green, Purple decks, then take turns rolling, moving, picking, and acting. It’s quick to learn, plays in 10–15 minutes, and needs no reading, perfect for busy little hands and curious hearts.
Why it’s useful for parents (and delightful for kids)
Parents tell us they want time that feels close, calm, and screen-free, moments where learning happens naturally. That’s exactly what Adventures of Andare is built for.
- Builds the body: Red cards get children moving in safe, age-appropriate ways, great for balance, strength, and coordination.
- Grows the mind: Green cards nudge early maths and thinking, counting, matching, pattern-spotting, and simple problem-solving.
- Warms the heart: Purple cards teach everyday kindness inspired by Sri Lankan values, greetings, gratitude, sharing, and caring.
- Practises social play: Turn-taking, listening, following simple instructions, cheering for others, and tiny steps toward confident group play.
- Creates connection: The game gives parents and caregivers a simple structure to laugh, model behaviour, and celebrate effort, together. oceantheorysl.com
Andare: more than “just a joker”
It’s our point of view that many colonial-era and later English-language summaries flattened Andare into only a “jester,” leaving out how his quick and pointed humour carried satire, social insight, and moral wit. In folklore, he’s also remembered as an accomplished improviser of verse and a sharp observer of human foibles, using laughter to teach, not merely to entertain. By placing Andare at the centre of early-childhood play, we reintroduce him as a clever, kind, and resilient role model: someone who faces life with a grin, learns fast, and helps others along the way. That’s the Andare we want little ones to grow up with. WikipediaTime Out Worldwide
