At Ocean Theory, we believe history should be more than a subject to study for exams—it should be a living, interactive story that connects us to our roots. To make this a reality, we are developing an exciting card game that blends the simplicity of a standard deck with the richness of Sri Lankan history. It goes by the name of KOMI which also means K knowledge OMI, a fun twist to the popular card game of Sri Lanka. We have worked hard on this game and finally, we have got our hands on the first Prototype of the game.
The game is easy to learn because it mirrors the structure of traditional card decks, with four suits representing Ancient Kings, Engineering Marvels, Ancient Wars, and Cultural Events. Each card features an illustration and brief details about a historical event on one side. The twist? Players must guess additional details—like when the event happened or its significance—before flipping the card to reveal the full story. This interactive format not only tests knowledge but also sparks curiosity, turning learning into a fun family activity.
Globally, researchers emphasize the value of learning history in fostering critical thinking, cultural appreciation, and empathy. Studies show that historical education boosts analytical skills and helps young learners understand societal evolution. In Sri Lanka, where history is often confined to school exams, this game opens a refreshing avenue for kids and adults alike to explore the past in an engaging way.
By combining fun and education, this card game could transform how history is taught and appreciated in Sri Lanka. It encourages a love for learning, bringing families together over a shared journey through time, while making the subject approachable and enjoyable. History has never been this fun—or this impactful!
